Goal 2: Understand the essential nature of information and its relevance to our diverse society.

  • Outcome 2a. Describe various definitions and concepts of information.
  • Outcome 2b. Explain the impact of information policies on intellectual freedom, access, literacy, information behavior, and other aspects of library and information science.
  • Outcome 2c. Develop appropriate responses to assessed information needs within diverse communities/organizations

Outcome 2a. Describe various definitions and concepts of information.

This presentation was created during my Library Materials for Young Adults class and is a deep dive/introduction to the literary format of manga. In it I define various marketing terms and unique genres as well as their conventions and appeal. Given its deep coverage of definitions and concepts regarding the information medium I believe that it demonstrates my mastery of this learning outcome well.

Notes: Given the very visual nature of this presentation I decided to include the speaker notes which contain most of the script I followed during the actual presentation, so that it is easy to understand the context of the presentation. These notes can, at time, be informal as a means to convey the tone that was intended in the presentation for the context in which it was given. Outcome 2b. Explain the impact of information policies on intellectual freedom, access, literacy, information behavior, and other aspects of library and information science.

This paper looks directly at the topic of access and information behavior in regard to transgender patrons in public libraries. It discusses the failings of cisgender librarians in discussion, attitude, and active support for their transgender patrons. While it only briefly mentions policy directly, the entire premise is how the necessary policies, practices, and programs have been known for some time and are not being acted upon. What is at the center of this paper is the impact that this apathy has on transgender patrons, which is why I think it demonstrates a mastery over this learning outcome.

Outcome 2c. Develop appropriate responses to assessed information needs within diverse communities/organizations.

This presentation was written as part of an assignment to research the information needs of needs and behavior of a community with recommendations on how to better meet the needs from a library perspective. These recommendations constitute appropriate responses and therefore demonstrate my mastery of this learning goal.
